If you’re planning on opening up a bottle of wine right after your tooth extraction, you’ll want to think twice about doing so. One of the post-op instructions your dentist will give you is to avoid drinking alcohol, and there are some very good reasons to follow their guidance! Here’s what you should know.

Why You Shouldn’t Drink Alcohol After Tooth Extraction

The primary reason you really shouldn’t drink alcohol after your tooth extraction is you could develop a painful condition known as dry socket. Part of the healing process involves your body forming a healthy blood clot over the extraction site. The clot will protect your now-empty socket from bacteria, infection, and external sensations. Alcohol can dislodge the clot or prevent it from forming altogether.

Here are other complications alcohol consumption can cause:

  • Increased bleeding
  • Slowed healing
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Negative interactions with prescribed pain medication or antibiotics

How Long You Should Wait to Drink Again

Your dentist will be able to tell you when it’s safe to start drinking alcohol again. But in general, you should wait until your mouth has made a full recovery, which could take up to two weeks. If you continue to take pain relievers, remember to double-check how it will interact with alcohol before indulging in your favorite drink.

Other Post-Op Recovery Tips

To promote a smooth and swift recovery, your dentist will likely recommend:

  • Getting plenty of rest
  • Avoiding strenuous activities
  • Gently brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis
  • Don’t spit, rinse your mouth, or drink through a straw
  • Stop smoking

Remember, your dentist will also be happy to answer any questions you may have about your tooth extraction post-op, and can provide clarity on their instructions if needed. It might be a few days to a couple of weeks until they give you the “green light” for drinking alcohol, but it will be worth it to avoid painful complications.
